About the book
Faces of Racism seeks to illuminate the nature of racism by describing both the ideas of advocates and the deeds of perpetrators. The topics are arranged alphabetically with an entry for each letter from A to Z but do not constitue a comprehensive account of the subject.
Within each of the topics, the examples are intended to illustrate that racism is universal an dthat in various forms it has appeared throughout history. As peter Gay notes:
The Hebrews of the Old Testament believed that Abraham's covenant with the Lord set them apart from lesser mortals. The Egyptians of the Old Kingdom took their fertile land as proof that the creator-god Ra had singled them out in preference to the miserable Asians. The Greeks thought themselves better than the barbarians... The animus was always the same... the more one loved one's own, the more one was entitled to hate the Other.
