'They swallow the wind and die': Newborn deaths in Hopley settlement, Zimbabwe

About 5,000 people live in Hopley settlement where conditions are dire. There are no maternal or newborn health services in the community. Amnesty International considers that preventable deaths of newborns at Hopley are a result of government failure to provide effective remedies for the victims of 2005’s forced evictions and failure to ensure pregnant women and girls have access to essential maternal and newborn health care. These failures constitute violations of the rights to health and to an adequate standard of living.
